August 16, 2018 (TAMPA, Fla.) – People suffering from chronic lung disease soon may find it easier to breathe, thanks to a new program recently developed by the Lung Health Institute.
Designed to help patients take charge of their health and increase lung function by reducing systemic inflammation, the Anti-Inflammatory Initiative (AI2) incorporates enhanced nutrition aimed at improving gut health to reduce toxins and help the body take advantage of healthy fats to fight inflammation.
“Our bodies typically do a great job of protecting us from toxins, but when the amount of toxins become too difficult for our body to manage, we get inflammation,” Amanda Maucere, RDN, dietitian at Lung Health Institute, said. “This is especially harmful for patients with chronic lung disease who already have difficulty breathing.”
AI2 plans encourage consumption of nutrient-dense foods like nuts, seeds, meats and seafood that provide a variety of vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals and fiber. Participants also incorporate activities tailored specifically for lung disease patients, inclusive of stretches and deep breathing.
“While many conditions we treat at Lung Health Institute have no cure, we have found that by combining conventional treatment with cellular therapy and wellness plans aimed at reducing inflammation such as AI2, we can help the body heal and fight for itself,” Maucere said.
Chronic lower respiratory diseases are the third largest cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Warning signs include shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, chronic mucus production, coughing up blood and unexpected chest pain lasting more than one month.
