What Are the Best Exercises for People with COPD?

One of the challenges of COPD is shortness of breath caused by inflammation. This inflammation progresses over time and can make breathing more difficult, but with treatment, you can help slow its progression and reduce the severity of its symptoms.

One part of many treatments includes instructions and guidance for physical activity. Exercises, stretches and other forms of activity can help keep your body fit, your resting heart rate low, and your lungs and diaphragm strong and flexible. Depending on the severity of your COPD, you have options for exercises to help you stay healthy and even help you breathe.

Three exercises for people with COPD

  1. Walk — Walking with COPD can seem daunting, but no one is asking you to walk miles. Go for a brief short walk outside or on a treadmill. Find out what you can handle and try to push it a little more each day. Add ten seconds or so every week and see how you can improve.
  2. Ride a stationary bike — Riding a stationary bike can be a great way to stay fit with COPD. You don’t have to focus as much on balancing or worry about falling if you run out of breath as you do with an actual bike. Plus, you can take a guided class led by professionals who can help people with COPD exercise on stationary bikes.
  3. Arm curls — Lifting weights can help you improve your strength so you can continue to lift heavy objects when your breathing is difficult. Use some light hand weights for curls. Hold your arms by your side with your palms facing forward and lift the weights toward your chest while keeping your elbows in place. Do this two or three times a week for two fifteen-repetition sets.
