Using this method regularly may help you clear more mucus from your lungs when it’s used with other mucus clearing tools.

Why mucus clearing is an important task you should be doing every day

Mucus is a substance in your body that typically helps your body capture harmful bacteria that enters your nose and throat. However, chronic lung disease patients are known to have mucus that’s thicker than normal, and this thicker mucus is often much more difficult to get out of your body.

By not leaving your body as it’s supposed to, mucus may cause you a variety of problems. For instance, it may increase your risk of developing secondary infections that may cause your lung symptoms to worsen. This increased risk is because of the bacteria that is caught in your mucus. The thicker mucus may also cause you to feel more breathless since it blocks or restricts your airways.

The five steps of huff coughing that may help you clear lung mucus

In order to clear the mucus from your lungs when you have a chronic lung condition, you may want to consider a method called huff coughing. Also known as huffing, this method involves five easy steps that you can do in your own home every day.

The first step of huffing is to make sure you’re sitting up straight. You’ll also want to tilt your chin up slightly toward the ceiling and open your mouth. Secondly, you should take a slow, deep breath in. However, you want to try not to fill your lungs completely but aim to fill them only about three-quarters full. The third step of huffing is to hold your breath for two to three seconds, and the fourth step is to exhale in a forceful manner. You should also make sure that your exhalation is slow and continuous. Exhaling in this way helps to move mucus from your smaller airways into your larger airways. The fifth and final huff coughing step is to repeat steps one through four at least two more times, and then cough once strongly to remove the mucus gathered in your larger airways.

For the best results, you’ll want to repeat these five steps four to five times during every huff coughing session you perform. You may also want to drink lots of water and breathe in steam infused with eucalyptus or peppermint essential oils. These two actions may help thin your mucus and may help make your huffing sessions more productive.
