The number of people dealing with chronic lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) continues to grow. In fact, a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that COPD makes breathing more difficult for more than 16 million Americans.

Although smoking is the biggest cause of chronic lung conditions, eating preserved foods may also contribute to people getting such diseases. Preservatives may also cause chronic lung disease symptoms to worsen, and there are 2 preservatives, in particular, every chronic lung disease patient should avoid.

1. Sulfites

Sulfites are a category of preservatives that are often used in food. Compounds like sodium and potassium bisulfite, sodium and potassium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite and sulfur dioxide are all in this preservative category. They’re used to make food appear fresh by helping it retain its natural color.

These compounds are commonly used to preserve foods such as:

  • Dried fruits
  • Bottled lime or lemon juice
  • Molasses
  • Pre-made guacamole
  • Dehydrated, flaked or peeled potatoes
  • Jarred sauerkraut

You can avoid sulfites by choosing organic foods that don’t use chemical preservatives.

2. Nitrites

Another category of preservatives that can cause COPD symptoms to worsen is nitrites. The nitrite family of preservatives is often used in:

  • Bacon
  • Sausage
  • Pastrami
  • Hot dog
  • Ham

Nitrites are added to these and other foods for several reasons. For one thing, they help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. They also help to keep food colorful so they appear more appetizing to consumers.

However, nitrites can also have negative effects on lung function. In fact, one article published in the European Respiratory Journal reported that nitrites have a negative effect on lung capacity. The article says that these preservatives have also been linked to an increased risk of developing COPD, and they also increase the risk of extreme worsening of COPD symptoms, which is known as an exacerbation.

Lung Health Institute Can Help You Treat Chronic Lung Diseases

Our health care team at the Lung Health Institute has made it our mission to help chronic lung disease patients find the best natural treatment options.

For one thing, our team offers 3 Anti-Inflammatory Initiative, or AI2™, plans, and these plans provide you with information that can help you naturally boost your immune system. The information in these plans is also intended to help train your body to use fats as inflammation-fighting fuel.

We also offer a minimally invasive treatment option called cellular therapy. This is a procedure that uses concentrated platelets and cells from your body to target lung disease. These platelets release anti-inflammatory properties that, when combined with growth factors, proteins and other helpful cells, may help to promote healing in damaged tissue and reduce inflammation in your lungs.

Take the next step to find relief. Contact Lung Health Institute today for more information or to schedule a free consultation.
